MSEDCL proposes power tariff hike yet again!

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd has proposed a tariff hike of 5.5% for commercial and industrial customers. MSEDCL has sought a hike for the next four financial years, till 2020. Given below are the expected increased power tariffs for next coming years.

Mahadiscom Multi-Year Tariff FY2016-17 to FY19-20

MSEDCL has proposed to hike both the fixed and energy charges. The industrial and educational tariff is expected to increase at an average rate of 5% per year whereas the commercial tariff is expected to increase at an average rate of 6.5% per year. The time of day metering charges will remain the same.

In addition to the base electricity tariffs, MSEDCL levies extra charges like fuel adjustment charges, electricity duty and tax on sale of electricity. Considering these additional charges, the consumer is actually charged at a higher rate than the base rate. Currently, the industrial customer pays Rs. 8-8.50/ unit whereas the commercial customer pays Rs. 15-15.50/unit for consumption of electricity. As per the tariff rates forecasted for 2019-20, the effective rate will be Rs. 9-9.50/ unit for industrial customers and Rs. 17-17.50/ unit for commercial customers.

Based on this scenario, it is advisable to opt for solar captive rooftop plant in which one can generate and consume electricity on their own. It is a one time investment where the levelised cost of solar is only Rs. 2-3/unit as opposed to conventional tariff which is Rs. 10-10.50/unit. The maintenance of the system is negligible and payback for the system is within 3-4 years. One can also supply surplus electricity to MSEDCL and get credit for it.
